ASA5512-IPS-K9 Exact IPS Edition

ASA5512-IPS-K9 is a physical Cisco ASA 5512-X IPS Edition appliance in the 3DES/AES-license edition. Cisco's ordering table identifies the IPS Edition separately from the Firewall Edition; the PID alone does not prove a current IPS subscription term.

Hardware identity

Cisco documents 6 copper Gigabit Ethernet data ports, one copper Gigabit Ethernet management port and one AC power supply for this platform. The family data sheet lists up to 250 IPsec peers, which is a historical scale value rather than a current performance or support guarantee.

Encryption suffix boundary

K9 identifies the 3DES/AES export edition. The suffix does not prove software support, active IPS entitlement, measured throughput or compliance with current cryptographic policy.

Lifecycle decision

Cisco lists August 31, 2022 as the last date of support for ASA 5512-X. Treat this SKU as unsupported legacy infrastructure with a documented replacement path.

Small-platform recovery boundary

ASA5512-IPS-K9 is the K9 IPS Edition of the entry ASA 5512-X platform. Its smaller hardware profile and ended support make it appropriate only for controlled recovery or migration evidence.

Verify chassis identity, K9 edition, six data ports and the saved policy. Measure real traffic and inspection demand, then prove that the supported successor can restore routing, NAT, VPN and IPS behavior.

Recovery rehearsal record

Run a timed restore into an isolated device or equivalent lab and record image compatibility, configuration warnings, interface mapping and policy load results. Exercise one routed flow, one translated flow, one VPN negotiation and one IPS event. Capture the failure point and rollback step for each test, and identify any dependency that cannot be represented on the supported successor without redesign.

Small-appliance spare assessment

Evaluate this ended-support unit as a recovery artifact, not as indefinite production capacity. Inspect storage, fans, power input, interface error counters and configuration media; record serial identity and the approved software image checksum. Define how long the spare may remain powered, which sites it can temporarily support and the maximum restoration window before a supported replacement is mandatory. Store console instructions and sanitized configuration backups under access control. A successful bench boot is insufficient: the assessment must show route, translation, encrypted peer and IPS-event behavior, plus the operational trigger that removes the spare again.
