ASA5515-IPS-K9 Exact IPS Edition

ASA5515-IPS-K9 is a physical Cisco ASA 5515-X IPS Edition appliance in the 3DES/AES-license edition. Cisco's ordering table identifies the IPS Edition separately from the Firewall Edition; the PID alone does not prove a current IPS subscription term.

Hardware identity

Cisco documents 6 copper Gigabit Ethernet data ports, one copper Gigabit Ethernet management port and one AC power supply for this platform. The family data sheet lists up to 250 IPsec peers, which is a historical scale value rather than a current performance or support guarantee.

Encryption suffix boundary

K9 identifies the 3DES/AES export edition. The suffix does not prove software support, active IPS entitlement, measured throughput or compliance with current cryptographic policy.

Lifecycle decision

Cisco lists August 31, 2022 as the last date of support for ASA 5515-X. A present-day purchase requires an exception, configuration-recovery plan and funded migration.

K9 branch policy reconstruction

ASA5515-IPS-K9 identifies the K9 IPS Edition of ASA 5515-X. K9 distinguishes the encryption edition, while actual IPS coverage still depends on software, policy and entitlement evidence.

Reconstruct the intended branch policy from approved applications instead of cloning the full legacy rule base. Validate certificate ownership, tunnel routes and IPS event handling as separate controls.

Application-first policy map

Start with named applications and owners, then derive firewall and IPS rules for each approved path. Record certificate or shared-key custody, expected tunnel prefixes, signature groups, event severity and response owner. Compare the resulting map with observed traffic for at least one business cycle and place unmatched legacy objects into an investigation queue rather than silently retaining them.

Encrypted branch service validation

Because this is the K9 branch SKU, validate encryption and inspection as linked but independent outcomes. A successful tunnel does not prove protected applications are inspected, and an IPS event does not prove routing is correct. Test certificate validity or shared-key custody, proposal negotiation, protected prefixes, application transaction, expected signature event and central alert ownership in sequence. Include rekey and failover observations where the design uses them. Document any traffic that bypasses inspection because of topology or encryption placement, and assign that gap to the successor architecture instead of hiding it behind a generic K9 capability statement.
