ASA5512-IPS-K8 Bundle Identity

ASA5512-IPS-K8 identifies an ASA 5512-X ordered with the Intrusion Prevention System option. Cisco's official product description lists six Gigabit Ethernet data ports, one Gigabit Ethernet management port, AC power and DES encryption. The K8 suffix must not be described as the unrestricted K9 encryption version.

IPS Image and License Verification

Cisco Field Notice FN63705 specifically includes ASA5512-IPS-K8 and warns that some ASA 5500-X appliances ordered with IPS might not have the default IPS software image installed. A used or spare appliance therefore requires direct verification of the installed image, license state, SSD and entitlement history; the PID alone does not prove that signatures or support remain active.

Lifecycle and Migration Risk

Cisco ended hardware support for the ASA 5512-X family on August 31, 2022. The same lifecycle notice lists the older IPS and ASA software PIDs alongside FirePOWER upgrade and bundle paths, but it does not make a legacy IPS entitlement equivalent to a current security subscription. Procurement should be limited to controlled replacement or migration scenarios with an explicit support decision.

• Confirm that DES-only K8 encryption is acceptable for the intended jurisdiction and VPN design.
• Verify the IPS image, SSD, license activation and signature-update status on the exact serial number.
• Confirm all six data interfaces, the management interface, AC supply and rack hardware are present.
• Document the migration plan because Cisco hardware support ended in 2022.
