ASA5555-IPS-K9 Exact IPS Edition

ASA5555-IPS-K9 is a physical Cisco ASA 5555-X IPS Edition appliance in the 3DES/AES-license edition. Cisco's ordering table identifies the IPS Edition separately from the Firewall Edition; the PID alone does not prove a current IPS subscription term.

Hardware identity

Cisco documents 8 copper Gigabit Ethernet data ports, one copper Gigabit Ethernet management port and one AC power supply for this platform. The family data sheet lists up to 5000 IPsec peers, which is a historical scale value rather than a current performance or support guarantee.

Encryption suffix boundary

K9 identifies the 3DES/AES export edition. The suffix does not prove software support, active IPS entitlement, measured throughput or compliance with current cryptographic policy.

Lifecycle decision

Cisco's compatibility record shows September 30, 2025 as the end-of-support date for ASA 5555-X. Procurement evidence must identify a supported successor and policy-conversion owner.

High-scale IPS policy migration

ASA5555-IPS-K9 combines the larger ASA 5555-X chassis identity, IPS Edition ordering identity and K9 encryption edition. Its useful procurement value is configuration recovery or a controlled migration, not a new unsupported security deployment.

Export firewall and IPS policies separately. Map each IPS rule to its protected flow, event destination, owner and successor control, then migrate low-risk monitor-only signatures before blocking controls.

Event-to-policy correlation workbook

Build one record per material IPS event class with source zone, destination service, signature identifier, action, false-positive history and application owner. Compare the record with firewall permit rules so the replacement does not preserve inspection for traffic that can no longer traverse the policy. Retain packet evidence for the highest-volume and highest-severity classes, plus the rollback action for every blocking rule.

Data-center migration wave design

For this larger K9 appliance, group applications by maintenance tolerance, asymmetric routing risk and encrypted-session dependency. Start with a monitor-only server segment whose traffic can be replayed, then progress to active blocking only after event parity is demonstrated. Record cluster or failover state, route convergence, connection-table behavior and the disposition of every custom signature. A wave is complete only when the application owner accepts both successful transactions and expected deny events. Keep the prior policy export immutable, but do not use it as an automatic import source; every migrated control must trace back to an approved service and current threat requirement.
