ASA5545-IPS-K9 Exact IPS Edition

ASA5545-IPS-K9 is a physical Cisco ASA 5545-X IPS Edition appliance in the 3DES/AES-license edition. Cisco's ordering table identifies the IPS Edition separately from the Firewall Edition; the PID alone does not prove a current IPS subscription term.

Hardware identity

Cisco documents 8 copper Gigabit Ethernet data ports, one copper Gigabit Ethernet management port and one AC power supply for this platform. The family data sheet lists up to 2500 IPsec peers, which is a historical scale value rather than a current performance or support guarantee.

Encryption suffix boundary

K9 identifies the 3DES/AES export edition. The suffix does not prove software support, active IPS entitlement, measured throughput or compliance with current cryptographic policy.

Lifecycle decision

Cisco's compatibility record shows September 30, 2025 as the end-of-support date for ASA 5545-X. Existing deployments should be measured and migrated rather than expanded.

K9 inspection cutover baseline

ASA5545-IPS-K9 is the K9 IPS Edition of the eight-data-port ASA 5545-X. Validate the exact software and inspection policy before using it to recover an older configuration.

Capture interface, routing, NAT, failover, VPN and IPS state. Reproduce representative allowed, denied and inspected flows on the target platform while recording policy translation gaps.

Eight-interface cutover matrix

Create one row for each physical data interface with security zone, VLAN or routed subnet, route owner, NAT role, IPS policy and log destination. Add expected counters before and after cutover and identify interfaces that can be retired. Test an allowed flow, blocked flow and signature-triggering flow for every retained zone pair, then preserve timestamps from both the traffic source and central event collector.

Policy translation acceptance

Treat ASA syntax conversion and IPS policy conversion as separate deliverables. The firewall reviewer confirms routes, objects, NAT order and connection behavior; the security reviewer confirms signature scope, action, exception and telemetry. Build negative tests around services that must remain blocked, including unexpected ports and malformed requests, rather than relying only on successful application checks. Record which controls are native on the successor and which require compensating services. Final acceptance needs a clean configuration diff, synchronized logs, a rollback checkpoint and an owner for rules that cannot be translated without changing application behavior.
