Where Cisco Nexus 9000 switches fit
Nexus 9000 platforms serve leaf, spine and data center access roles. Buyers must align the exact fixed or modular switch with cabling, server speeds, oversubscription targets and the intended NX-OS or ACI operating model.
Technical and commercial checks
- Map every downlink and uplink speed, connector and breakout requirement.
- Confirm port-side intake or exhaust airflow and matching power supplies.
- Identify NX-OS standalone or ACI fabric deployment and licensing.
- Calculate route, MAC, buffer and telemetry requirements for the design.
How to make the selection
Build the port map first, including future server and storage connections. Select leaf and spine capacity from the traffic model, then confirm software mode, optics compatibility, airflow and power. Do not treat two 48-port Nexus models as interchangeable.
Worked example: legacy Nexus 93180LC-EX
A port-count maximum is not a fixed cabling plan. For the N9K-C93180LC-EX port, power and lifecycle details, the 40/50G and 100G maxima describe alternative profiles. Start with the required link speeds and breakout plan, then check the supported software template and optics before assigning ports. Do not add the two maxima together.
This model also shows why lifecycle belongs in the selection decision. Cisco's exact-model lifecycle notice records the final support date as August 31, 2025 and identifies Nexus 9336C-FX2 as the migration reference. A legacy replacement enquiry should specify the installed configuration, condition and independent warranty terms; a new deployment needs a separately validated migration design. A seller quotation does not extend Cisco support.
