Internal-antenna FortiAP for medium-density rooms

FAP-221E is Fortinet's indoor 802.11ac Wave 2 access point with two radios, two spatial streams per radio and four internal antennas. Fortinet positions the model for medium-density environments such as offices and classrooms. It must not be confused with the external-antenna FAP-223E.

Radio and antenna identity

The 2.4 GHz radio supports 2x2:2 operation up to 400 Mbps, while the 5 GHz 802.11ac radio supports 2x2:2 operation up to 867 Mbps under the documented channel and client conditions. Internal patch antennas are rated at 4 dBi on 2.4 GHz and 5 dBi on 5 GHz.

Power and wired attachment

The unit uses one 10/100/1000BASE-T interface and IEEE 802.3af PoE. Fortinet lists a maximum power draw of 12.36 W. Confirm that the switch PoE budget, cabling and management software release support the intended deployment before replacing or expanding an installed WLAN.

Management and lifecycle check

Fortinet release documentation identifies FAP-221E as a FortiAP-W2 model and notes that W2 models do not provide the FortiAP-S unified threat-management function set. Validate the target FortiGate or other supported management architecture and firmware compatibility rather than treating FAP-221E and FAP-S221E as the same order.
