FP8140-K9 Hardware Identity

FP8140-K9 is a physical classic NGIPS appliance in the Cisco FirePOWER 8000 Series 8100 family. It is security hardware, not an Ethernet switch and not a software-only entitlement. Cisco documents it as a 1U CHAS chassis designation with 6 Gbps IPS throughput in Cisco's model table.

Reconcile all three network-module positions with the monitored links and bypass requirements. If a second chassis is used, prove the stacking hardware and management state rather than doubling a standalone sizing number. Test policy processing, events and failure behavior across the actual two-device design.

8100 stack exit plan

Document how traffic and policy state leave the paired 8140 environment. Preserve member serials, stack links and module mapping, then stage migration one security zone at a time. The end-of-support status means the recovery plan should prioritize movement to a supported platform over rebuilding the legacy stack.

Power resilience

Test both feeds where redundant supplies exist and document the alternate path where they do not. Include power-cord type, input voltage and rack distribution in the receiving record.

Signature lifecycle

Record the last available intrusion and malware content, the update source and the risk owner for operating without current signatures. Hardware availability does not restore security-content support.

Capacity evidence

Retain packet size, protocol mix, enabled inspections and event rate with every performance test. Published IPS throughput is conditional and should not be used as an unqualified production guarantee.

Cisco's compatibility guide records end of support on December 31, 2022. Before purchase or reuse, reconcile the exact serial inventory, software and management compatibility, security-content availability, policy migration and replacement owner.
