C9115AXI-EWC-I Controller-Host Order

C9115AXI-EWC-I combines the Catalyst 9115 internal-antenna AP with Cisco's Embedded Wireless Controller image for the -I regulatory domain. EWC means this unit was ordered to host controller functions; it does not make every AP in a deployment an independent controller.

Plan the controller role before staging

Record whether this AP will remain the active EWC controller, operate as a subordinate AP or be converted to lightweight CAPWAP mode. Back up the EWC configuration and document management IP, software train and recovery path before replacing a controller-host unit.

Software lifecycle is now material

Cisco ended sale of AP-based EWC PIDs on November 29, 2024 and identifies IOS XE 17.15.x as the final supporting software train. The bulletin gives November 30, 2029 as last support, subject to valid contracts; conversion to CAPWAP changes the applicable support path.

Internal antenna deployment

The AXI radio uses Cisco's integrated omnidirectional antennas rather than external RP-TNC antennas. Compare C9115AXE-EWC-Q only when the site requires separately selected external antenna patterns.

Country-domain acceptance

The I suffix selects a regulatory domain. Check the exact installation country in Cisco's compliance database, then verify controller country-code configuration, allowed channels and transmit power before service.

Power and migration test

Test 802.3at full-feature operation, 2.5G Ethernet negotiation, both 4x4 radios, EWC boot and configuration backup. Also prove CAPWAP conversion/recovery if migration away from AP-hosted EWC is part of the lifecycle plan.
