ASA5555-K9 Exact Firewall Edition

ASA5555-K9 is a physical Cisco ASA 5555-X Firewall Edition in the 3DES/AES-license edition. Cisco documents 8 copper Gigabit Ethernet data ports, one copper Gigabit Ethernet management port and one AC power supply for this edition.

Encryption suffix boundary

K9 establishes the 3DES/AES product edition but does not prove that every algorithm, throughput level or VPN feature is enabled and acceptable. Software release, entitlement, export status and organizational crypto policy still control deployment.

Platform scale is not current fitness

Cisco's data sheet lists up to 5000 IPsec VPN peers for the ASA 5555-X family, but this historical maximum does not override the K9 encryption restriction, current software support, measured performance or lifecycle status.

Lifecycle decision

Cisco's compatibility record shows September 30, 2025 as the end-of-support date for the ASA 5555-X family. The procurement record must identify the supported successor and a policy-conversion owner.

High-scale K9 VPN migration baseline

The ASA5555-K9 is the 3DES/AES edition of the larger ASA 5555-X firewall and is the only SKU in this group whose suffix supports an AES-oriented deployment identity.

Inventory tunnel peers, algorithms, certificates, protected routes, session demand and business owners. Separate the platform's published peer scale from measured encrypted throughput and from the successor firewall's licensing model.

Crypto and failover evidence

Verify K9 entitlement and the approved ASA image, run representative AES traffic and rekey events, then exercise the documented HA path. Preserve loss, latency, route and log recovery measurements with a staged peer-migration sequence.

Peer-by-peer migration waves

Divide VPN peers into waves based on authentication, address overlap, route complexity and maintenance tolerance. Pilot a low-impact certificate-based peer, then progress to shared-key and overlapping-prefix cases only after rollback is proven. Each wave needs a contact, test prefixes, expected log events, cutover timestamp and a route withdrawal plan. Keep old and new cryptographic proposals visible during the transition so operators can distinguish a negotiation failure from routing or policy loss.
