Enterprise Optical Transceiver Buying Guide: Compatibility Before Price
Optical transceivers are often ordered by speed alone, but a matching data rate does not guarantee a working link. The optic, fiber plant, connector, wavelength, reach and network platform must form one compatible design.
Record these fields for both ends of the link
- Form factor and data rate: SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28 or another platform-specific format.
- Optical standard, wavelength and supported reach.
- Single-mode or multimode fiber, connector type and available fiber pairs.
- Host switch or router model, line card, software release and supported optic part number.
- Temperature grade, digital diagnostics and any breakout-cable requirement.
Procurement FAQ
Will any 10G SFP+ work in any SFP+ port? No. Check the platform compatibility matrix and software requirements for the exact host device.
Can BiDi optics be installed at only one end? No. BiDi links require a complementary wavelength pair and the correct single-fiber path.
Can the link exceed the stated reach? Do not plan a link beyond the supported optical budget. Fiber loss, connectors and splices must be included in the calculation.
