FortiGate Firewall Sizing Guide for Branch and Enterprise Buyers
FortiGate firewall sizing should not be based on price alone. The right model depends on user count, enabled security services, internet bandwidth, VPN load, high availability design, interface requirements and support license status.
Key sizing checks before buying FortiGate
- Confirm the real inspected throughput requirement, not only raw firewall throughput.
- Check whether IPS, antivirus, web filtering, SSL inspection or VPN will be enabled at the same time.
- Confirm interface type and count, including RJ45, SFP, SFP+, bypass ports, and WAN redundancy needs.
- For critical sites, confirm HA pair availability, matching firmware, transceivers, power supply and support subscription.
Common buying mistakes
- Buying a model that fits today but cannot handle SSL inspection or future bandwidth growth.
- Ignoring license renewal cost when comparing new, surplus, or refurbished units.
- Mixing incompatible accessories or transceivers without checking project requirements.
Use inspected throughput for sizing
Published firewall throughput is not the same as performance with IPS, application control, antivirus and SSL inspection enabled. Build a sizing worksheet from peak internet traffic, east-west traffic that crosses the firewall, remote-access VPN users, site-to-site tunnels and expected growth. Then compare that workload with the relevant threat-protection figures for the candidate appliance.
Interface planning matters as much as throughput. Record copper and fiber handoffs, WAN redundancy, switch aggregation, bypass requirements and the optics already used by the project. For high availability, both appliances should use a compatible model, firmware branch, interface design and subscription term.
Check subscriptions and renewal dates
FortiGate hardware can operate with different FortiCare and FortiGuard service combinations. The quotation should identify whether the SKU is hardware only or a bundle, which services are included, the contract duration and how registration will be handled. For replacement stock, verify whether the existing configuration and licenses can be migrated before selecting the appliance.
