Choose the storage-equipped wired order

FG-51G is the standard wired FortiGate 51G desktop appliance with a 64 GB SSD and five Gigabit RJ45 Ethernet connections. The FG-50G row has no internal SSD. FG-51G does not have the wireless interface of a FortiWiFi model, and the cellular or SFP/PoE versions have different exact order codes. Specify the whole identifier rather than assuming every storage-equipped 50G-series unit has the same interfaces.

Allocate five physical copper links

The exact FG-51G order describes four internal RJ45 connections and one WAN. In the default interface table those same five connections are one WAN, three ordinary RJ45 ports and one FortiLink port. FortiLink is a configurable role within the physical port set, not a sixth connector. Fortinet explains that a FortiLink-enabled port can be reconfigured as a regular port. Confirm the desired switch integration and operating roles before cabling; this standard order does not list an SFP slot or powered PoE interfaces.

Plan what the internal SSD will actually retain

The 64 GB capacity identifies the local storage option; it does not establish a guaranteed number of logging days. Retention depends on the enabled log categories, traffic volume and policy. Set the collection scope, export destination and capacity monitoring for the intended deployment rather than estimating retention from the model suffix alone. Storage and service entitlement are separate: confirm the quoted software or support scope and registration owner instead of treating an appliance listing as a subscription bundle.

Fit the standard desktop power and enclosure

The FG-50/51G specification column lists 12 VDC, 3 A input and an external adapter supplied from 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Its average/maximum consumption is 8.3/8.9 W under the published conditions. This fanless desktop chassis measures 40.5 x 216 x 160 mm, weighs 1.0 kg and operates at 0-40 degrees Celsius. Use the rated assembly and a suitable installation environment; the higher-voltage PoE supply belongs to another variant. One USB and one RJ45 console port support local administration.

Distinguish hardware safeguards from throughput tests

The exact hardware table lists a trusted platform module and a signed-firmware hardware switch. Fortinet describes the switch as enforcing approved FortiOS firmware at its highest security setting; confirm the intended firmware and configuration during deployment. The enterprise-mix benchmarks of up to 2.25 Gbps IPS, 1.25 Gbps NGFW and 1.1 Gbps threat protection are measured with logging enabled. The separate basic UDP firewall result is 5/5/4 Gbps at 1518/512/64-byte packets. Select capacity for the actual enabled features and log handling instead of treating the largest figure as universal performance.
