Combine local storage with a cellular WAN, without adding Wi-Fi

FG-51G-5G is the storage-equipped wired FortiGate in the combined FG-50G-5G/51G-5G column. It contains a 64 GB SSD and an embedded cellular WAN module. The FG-50G-5G has no internal SSD, while FWF-50G-5G-II is the separate FortiWiFi radio order. Choose FG-51G-5G for the required local-storage design; its cellular module does not make this appliance a Wi-Fi access point.

Define the log workload before assigning a retention period

An SSD capacity of 64 GB is not a guaranteed number of retained days. Estimate logging rates, selected event types and forwarding requirements, and confirm the intended local or external log destination. The hardware identifier does not establish a FortiGuard bundle duration or create a new service entitlement; verify the quoted subscriptions and serial eligibility separately.

Specify SIM failover and current operator acceptance

The manufacturer modem table identifies Telit Cinterion FN990A28-HP and two Nano SIM slots in active/passive operation. Two slots are not a claim of concurrent dual cellular links. Validate each proposed SIM, operator profile, supported band and APN for the deployment. The manufacturer sheet lists PTCRB, ATT and Verizon as Yes, while T-Mobile is Target Q4 26. Published carrier labels do not guarantee that an individual operator will activate the supplied chassis. The modem All Regions row is not a substitute for destination radio approval.

Map the Ethernet roles and installation requirements

The exact FG-51G-5G order lists five Gigabit RJ45 ports: one WAN and four internal. The interface table separates those into one accelerated WAN, three RJ45 and one FortiLink interface by default. Count five physical ports, then confirm their actual configuration. One USB and one RJ45 console are listed. The wired 5G column specifies a fanless desktop, 12 VDC 3 A input, an external adapter supplied from 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz, and average/maximum consumption of 8.3/8.9 W. Operating ambient is 0-40 degrees Celsius.

Distinguish appliance test capacity from mobile network speed

Fortinet publishes enterprise-mix IPS at up-to 2.25 Gbps, NGFW at 1.25 Gbps and threat protection at 1.1 Gbps, with logging enabled. The basic UDP firewall benchmark is 5/5/4 Gbps for 1518/512/64-byte packets. Evaluate the intended inspection settings and real traffic. None of these firewall measurements is a promised cellular downlink, coverage level or carrier service rate.
