Identify the original ASR1006 chassis

ASR1006 is the original Cisco ASR 1006 chassis order, distinct from ASR1006-X. Its official hardware column lists three SIP or Ethernet line-card positions and a height of 10.5 inches. Preserve the complete PID when matching a replacement chassis or spare module; the X variant has different expansion characteristics.

Build interfaces from compatible line cards and adapters

Cisco lists twelve SPA slots for ASR1006 and marks EPA capacity as not applicable in this chassis column. Built-in Gigabit data interfaces are listed as zero. The required network connections therefore depend on the selected interface cards, SIP carriers and adapters, not on a presumed fixed set of ports supplied with the chassis.

Choose the forwarding processor for the intended load

Supported ESP choices in the datasheet span 10 to 100 Gbps. ASR1000-ESP40 and ASR1000-ESP100 are separate module choices with different software requirements; the chassis order is not proof of either module being installed. Check the actual processor inventory and applicable licenses before sizing traffic or cryptographic workloads.

Review redundancy and rack installation as one assembly

The chassis provides two route-processor slots and two ESP slots, with hardware redundancy supported. Confirm that a quoted system contains a matched, supported redundant configuration. Cisco specifies 19-inch rack mounting and front-to-back airflow; allow additional depth for handles, cabling and maintenance access beyond the enclosure measurement.
