Choose the intended M-500 operating mode

The Palo Alto Networks M-500 hardware guide describes three configuration modes: Panorama for centralized management and logging, dedicated Log Collector, and PAN-DB Private Cloud for URL-filtering lookups. These are configuration choices for the appliance; the model name alone does not establish the installed mode or the software entitlements included in an offer.

Audit the storage and network configuration

M-500 provides 24 drive bays organized into RAID 1 pairs. The guide permits all bays from the 8.0 release, whereas earlier releases use only the first 16. Check installed drive sizes, pair health and the running release rather than assuming the maximum storage is present. Two 10 Gigabit SFP+ interfaces are identified as ethernet1/4 and ethernet1/5; the guide states that they are not functional before Panorama 8.0. The rear panel also provides Gigabit RJ-45 connectivity and two redundant hot-swappable 1200 W power supplies.

Account for the end-of-life date before ordering

The official lifecycle table records end of sale on February 29, 2020 and end of life on February 28, 2025 for M-500, with PAN-OS 10.1 listed as the last supported branch and marked EOL. Treat an offered unit as a legacy management platform. Request its disk and power-supply inventory, configured mode, license status and log-migration requirements; neither a chassis quotation nor historical hardware capability confirms a current support entitlement.
