Access Controller versus Mobility Controller
J9421A is the HP ProCurve MSM760 Access Controller; J9420A is the separate Mobility Controller order. The MSM760 manages MSM access points. Its controller role should not be confused with supplying a bank of switched access ports. HP installation guide, Introduction.
Plan the two network connections
The hardware guide assigns Ethernet connector 1 to Internet and connector 2 to LAN. Both are autosensing 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports. The separate RJ-45 console is serial, not a third Ethernet connection. The front LCD shows controller type and the AP limit allowed by its license.
Legacy replacement, with explicit limits
The HPE April 2017 end-of-sale notice lists J9421A for discontinuation on June 30, 2017 or while supplies last; it names no marketing replacement. This does not establish remaining stock or present support eligibility.
