License a mail-security virtual appliance

FML-VM04 is the exact Fortinet order for a four-vCPU FortiMail virtual appliance. The manufacturer identifies VMware ESX/ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer and KVM in its ordering row. This is email-security software for a supported virtual environment, not a FortiGate firewall chassis or a physical server supplied with four processor cores.

Use the right denominator for the mail design

The VM04 specification column lists 500 protected email domains. Fortinet defines that metric as domains configured on the appliance; Domain Associations may cover additional domains sharing a primary domain’s configuration. It is not a count of endpoint-agent licenses. Separately, the same column lists 1,500 local mailboxes in Server Mode. A Gateway deployment should not be sized by assuming that every protected-domain entry represents a local mailbox.

Fortinet recommends VM04 for mid-to-large enterprises when discussing Gateway and Transparent deployments, while its footnote directs Server Mode planning to the mailbox metric. Validate the proposed mail flow, peak message volume and deployment mode for the specific environment. The recommendation is not a guarantee that every enterprise fits this profile.

Reserve virtual resources before scheduling deployment

VM04 supports up to four virtual CPUs and one to six virtual NICs. Its published memory range is 4 GB to 16 GB. Those are VM resource specifications, not physical ports or RAM shipped with the software order. Confirm the hypervisor version, available resources and supported FortiMail release in the deployment plan.

The VM04 storage column gives 250 GB for the initial allocation and a 4 TB maximum. Fortinet’s footnote explains the initial OVF setup requirement and permits no less than 50 GB after the default OVF is removed following deployment. Plan actual mail and quarantine retention separately; neither the initial figure nor the ceiling is a disk included with this purchase.

Budget policy separation as well as domains

For VM04, the table allows 800 recipient-based policies per domain and 3,000 per system for incoming or outgoing policy. Antispam, antivirus, authentication and content profiles have separate limits of 50 per domain and 400 per system. Count the required policy and profile divisions before selecting the license; a design that fits the domain count can still require a review of its configuration limits.

Confirm deployment mode and additional entitlements

The data sheet warns that Transparent mode is not fully supported on Microsoft Hyper-V and cloud hypervisors because of network-configuration limitations. Match the deployment mode to the quoted platform and software release. General cloud-platform compatibility does not establish Marketplace billing, license transfer rights or a hosted-mail service for this exact order.

VM04 lists DLP and centralized quarantine capability, while Microsoft 365 and Google email API integration is optional. The manufacturer lists virtual-machine FortiCare and FortiGuard contracts separately from the FML-VM04 order. Obtain the exact support/security contract, duration, registration and delivery terms on the quotation; do not infer a one-year bundle or perpetual support from the VM04 code.
