FG-2500E Copper-Dense Firewall with Fiber Bypass

FG-2500E is a copper-dense 2RU FortiGate platform built around thirty-two GE RJ45 data ports, ten standard 10GbE SFP+ data ports and two additional 10GbE LC fiber bypass interfaces. It also includes a 480GB SSD, making its logging and bypass profile materially different from FG-2200E.

NP Direct topology is a design constraint

Four NP6 processors serve separate front-panel port groups. Fortinet states that LAGs or redundant interfaces cannot span ports connected to different NP6 processors, and hardware offload requires traffic to enter and exit on interfaces attached to the same NP6. Map each intended pair, LAG and traffic path to the official architecture before cabling.

Bypass ports have a specific role

Ports 43 and 44 form the 10GbE fiber bypass pair. Bypass can preserve a physical traffic path during a configured watchdog or power-loss condition, but it does not provide firewall inspection while bypassed. Confirm transparent-mode/VDOM design, optic type, cabling direction, watchdog policy and operational response before enabling it.

Published performance context

Fortinet publishes up to 11.5Gbps IPS, 9Gbps NGFW and 5.4Gbps threat-protection throughput, with 150/150/95Gbps IPv4 firewall throughput by packet size. The values use defined test profiles; size encrypted inspection, application mix, logging and session churn against the deployment rather than comparing raw firewall throughput alone.

Physical and acceptance checks

The appliance uses dual hot-swappable AC supplies, front-to-back airflow and one 480GB SSD. Record exact PID/serial, SSD health, PSU and fan status, rail/cord set and included optics. Validate the approved FortiOS path, NP6 port ownership, offload counters, bypass behavior, HA, log retention and a documented power/failure test before service.

Use FG-2200E when 25/40GbE density is the primary requirement; use FG-3500F when the design calls for 100GbE and much higher inspection capacity.
