FAP-223E is Fortinet's indoor dual-radio 802.11ac Wave 2 access point for installations that require adjustable external antennas. Its four RP-SMA antenna connections are the principal procurement difference from the internal-antenna FAP-221E.

RF design and supplied antennas

Fortinet specifies a 2.4 GHz 2x2:2 radio up to 400 Mbps and a 5 GHz 2x2:2 radio up to 867 Mbps. The product matrix lists four external dipole antennas with peak gain of 4 dBi at 2.4 GHz and 5 dBi at 5 GHz. Confirm antenna quantity, condition and orientation when procuring replacement stock.

Network and power prerequisites

FAP-223E provides one Gigabit Ethernet interface and accepts IEEE 802.3af PoE. The documented maximum power draw is 12.36 W. The access switch, PoE budget and mounting plan should be checked together because external antennas change placement and clearance requirements.

Software-family boundary

Fortinet classifies FAP-223E in the FortiAP-W2 firmware family. Official release notes distinguish W2 models from FAP-S models and state that W2 models do not include the FortiAP-S UTM capability set. Confirm management and firmware support for the exact FAP-223E identifier before deployment.
