Use the three slots correctly
The Cisco installation guide assigns slot 1 to the supervisor and slots 2 and 3 to switching modules. Supervisor redundancy is not supported in this chassis. Additional power hardware must not be mistaken for a second control-plane slot.

Prepare a slot schedule naming the supervisor and each proposed line card. Record the running software and the features that must remain available after replacement. Have the proposed combination checked against the applicable release notes before assuming that a module from another Catalyst 4500 installation will work.
