ASR1000-RP1 Overview
Replace the control processor, not the router
RP1 runs the operating system and handles control functions for the ASR 1000 platform. The modular RP1 is listed for ASR 1004 and ASR 1006. Cisco separately describes an embedded RP1 in ASR 1002; that distinction matters when identifying the replacement assembly.
Check the installed configuration
Cisco lists 4 GB as the RP1 default and documents older 2 GB configurations. Record the actual memory and software version on the installed unit. The management Ethernet port is not a substitute for the router's traffic interfaces.

Account for the retired lifecycle
Cisco ended sales on April 29, 2016 and support on April 30, 2021. Its migration bulletin lists RP2 as a replacement, but this is not a blanket interchangeability guarantee. Check the chassis and software requirements before changing processor generation.
