ASR1000-ESP40 Overview

A 40-Gbps forwarding module, not a router bundle

ASR1000-ESP40 is the Cisco ASR 1000 Series 40-Gbps Embedded Services Processor. It provides the forwarding and service-processing role inside a supported modular router. The ordering line identifies an ESP card; it does not supply the host chassis, route processor or network-interface population.

Use the exact ESP40 compatibility table

Cisco lists ASR1004, ASR1006, ASR1006-X, ASR1009-X and ASR1013 in the ESP40 compatible-hardware table, together with RP2 and RP3 route processors. Compatibility still depends on the selected chassis and software combination. ASR1002-F is a fixed platform and is not a host for an ESP40 upgrade.

Keep forwarding capacity separate from encrypted throughput

The 40-Gbps designation identifies the ESP forwarding class. It does not mean every enabled service or encrypted workload runs at that rate. Validate the expected packet sizes, enabled features, software and relevant licensing against the required deployment rather than transferring the headline number to every traffic profile.

Redundancy depends on the installed pair and host

The official ESP datasheet describes 1+1 redundancy for supported dual-ESP configurations in ASR1006, ASR1006-X, ASR1009-X and ASR1013. A single ESP40 purchase does not establish redundant operation. Verify the installed peer, route processors and supported maintenance procedure before scheduling replacement or an upgrade.
