Antenna and quantity boundary

External antenna system required; verify the exact Cisco-supported antenna and connector arrangement. Treat the antenna design as an engineered item: retain the selected antenna, cable path, mounting method and regulatory approval with the access-point order.

The 3800 Series supports multigigabit Ethernet. Verify the switch port, cabling category, negotiated rate and error counters instead of assuming a 2.5 or 5 Gbps link. Commissioning should preserve the negotiated Ethernet rate, cable-test result, packet errors and switch configuration. Where the access switch is limited to 1 Gbps, state that design choice explicitly instead of presenting multigigabit capability as achieved throughput. Recheck negotiation after patch-cord or switch changes.

Regulatory approval

Use Cisco's country compliance information for the deployment address and retain the result. The domain letter must not be translated into a country from memory. This control prevents a pack-level SKU from obscuring which physical AP is covered by support or replacement work.

Replacement planning

Cisco lists the 3800 Series in its end-of-life notices. Record the permitted service horizon, replacement trigger and successor design with this purchase. Document the event that ends further 3802 deployment, the approved successor family and any controller coexistence constraint. Include funding, survey impact and installation sequencing. If the item is purchased as a spare, set a final-use date so old inventory does not silently outlive the network's supported architecture.

Monitoring ownership

Assign owners for controller alarms, switch-port health, radio utilization and software advisories so the installed AP remains observable after handover. Monitoring handover should name the team that owns AP reachability, controller join failures, radio utilization, client health and switch-port errors. Define alert thresholds and an escalation path, then verify that the exact serial appears in the operational inventory. Unowned telemetry does not provide a reliable service baseline.
