Check chassis revision before selecting a supervisor

Cisco requires chassis hardware revision 2.0 or higher for Supervisor 8-E and 8L-E on the 4507R-E. Record the chassis revision from the unit being supplied; the supervisor revision is not a substitute. See the official installation guide, Catalyst 4507R-E section.

Plan the control and switching positions

The seven-slot chassis assigns positions 3 and 4 to supervisors and positions 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 to switching modules. A redundant-capable chassis does not prove that the quoted assembly contains a second supervisor or is configured for switchover.

Document the required control-plane arrangement and ask the supplier to identify all fitted modules. For a replacement chassis, compare the existing line-card inventory, software release and expected interfaces with the proposed assembly before moving equipment. Do not treat the R-E and R+E suffixes as interchangeable.

Define a controlled replacement

Agree who will preserve configuration, label connections and supervise the maintenance window. Specify the checks for normal operation and, where required, an authorized failover test. Keep the return-to-service and rollback criteria explicit. Cooling clearance, power feeds, mounting and lifting arrangements must be checked for the assembled equipment, not inferred from a generic chassis photograph.
