ASR5K-SPIO-3PN-K9 Interface Identity

ASR5K-SPIO-3PN-K9 is the ASR 5000 Switch Processor Input/Output card configured with the three-pin T1 BITS timing interface. Cisco distinguishes this PID from the BNC E1 BITS SPIO and from SPS3 variants that add a Stratum 3 module.

Three-pin timing circuit

Cisco documents a wire-wrap connector that accepts a T1 (DS1) BITS all-ones timing signal. The specified circuit uses 22 AWG twisted-pair, 100-ohm shielded cable between the timing source and the SPIO. Confirm the site's timing standard, signal source, pin assignment, cable impedance, shield practice and grounding before installation.

Management and alarm interfaces

The SPIO platform interface also provides optical Gigabit Ethernet management LAN ports, copper 10/100/1000 management LAN ports, an RJ-45 console port and central-office dry-contact alarm connectivity. Record which interfaces are actually required, the SFP and peer details, IP addressing and the alarm wiring; a card label alone does not validate the management design.

Slot and mapping validation

Verify the supported SPIO slot, the associated System Management Card and the direct or cross mapping shown by the running system. Cisco's `show card mappings` output can reveal when an SPIO is cross-mapped after its former SMC becomes unavailable. Test the intended management and redundancy path rather than accepting only an operational LED.

Commissioning evidence

Capture PID, version, serial, card state, programmables status and usability. Validate console access, every connected management LAN path, BITS synchronization and alarm contacts. Monitor alarms and timing state through a controlled failover or maintenance event, then preserve before/after outputs and rollback steps.

Lifecycle and exclusions

Cisco includes ASR5K-SPIO-3PN-K9 in the ASR 5000 end-of-sale/end-of-life notice. This SKU is one SPIO card; it does not imply the Stratum 3 option, an E1 BNC interface, an SMC, an RCC, an optical SFP, chassis software or installation services.
