ASR5K-SMC-K9 System Management Identity

ASR5K-SMC-K9 is Cisco's 4GB System Management Card for the ASR 5000. The SMC is a management-plane card and must not be described as a Packet Services Card, Redundancy Crossbar or SPIO management-interface card merely because those components operate together in the same chassis.

Configuration and release evidence

Before sourcing a replacement, capture the installed SMC PID, hardware revision, serial, StarOS version, boot state and configuration backup. Confirm that the target card and programmable components are compatible with the running release and with the peer management card in the chassis.

Redundancy readiness

Record active and standby states, synchronization health, single-point-of-failure status, alarms and card usability. Cisco `show card` diagnostics expose card state, UDI identity, programmable revision and usability; preserve these outputs before and after the change. Test the approved management-card switchover procedure and confirm that control and management functions remain available.

SPIO relationship

Validate the direct or cross mapping between the SMC and its SPIO. A cross mapping can appear when an SPIO's former SMC is disabled. Verify console and management network access through the intended SPIO path, but do not treat the SPIO's timing, Ethernet, console or alarm connectors as interfaces included on this SMC SKU.

Cisco Field Notice FN-63758 identifies affected ASR 5000 and ASR 5500 components, including ASR5K-SMC-K9, that might fail to boot after a software upgrade or power cycle. Check the exact hardware identity and Cisco guidance applicable to the card, inspect condition and provenance, and complete a controlled reboot or recovery test only under an approved maintenance plan.
