ASR5K-011GE-SX-K9 Legacy GELC

ASR5K-011GE-SX-K9 is Cisco's original single-port Gigabit Ethernet line card for the ASR 5000 using an SX multimode short-haul SFP. Cisco's lifecycle notice identifies second-generation replacement ASR5K-011G2-SX-K9; verify whether the installed chassis and software can use that successor before sourcing the earlier GELC.

Single-uplink fit

This card is appropriate only where one 1GbE optical interface satisfies the legacy topology. Record its peer, VLAN or routed service, MTU, addressing and failover dependency. If the design needs several simultaneous links, compare the full architecture rather than substituting the four-port QGLC without checking slot, configuration and operational impact.

Generation and revision control

Capture the current card PID, hardware revision, serial and StarOS release. Distinguish first-generation `011GE` from second-generation `011G2`; similar front-panel media does not prove software or hardware interchangeability. Preserve Cisco compatibility evidence and a rollback plan before replacing a working card.

SX circuit validation

Verify multimode fiber type, link length, patching, polarity and the peer's SX interface. Clean connectors, establish link and monitor physical and interface error counters under traffic. Do not connect the short-wave multimode path as though it were LX single-mode or a 1000BASE-T copper circuit.

Change acceptance

After installation, confirm hardware inventory, card state, the single expected port, alarm status and configured service. Test representative traffic and the surrounding redundancy mechanism. Save before/after configuration, counters and rollback evidence because this card may carry a complete legacy uplink.

Legacy procurement boundary

The first-generation GELC is end-of-sale. Cisco named ASR5K-011G2-SX-K9 as its replacement in the Ethernet and optical line-card lifecycle notice, while the broader ASR 5000 platform also requires migration planning. This SKU supplies no chassis, extra ports, software entitlement, support or fiber plant.
