ASA5516-FPWR-K8 Exact Hardware Identity

ASA5516-FPWR-K8 is a physical Cisco ASA 5516-X with FirePOWER services appliance. Cisco's exact ordering description specifies 8 Gigabit Ethernet data ports, AC power and DES encryption edition. FirePOWER software subscriptions are separate term-based items; this hardware PID does not prove a current IPS, malware or URL-filtering term.

Storage and receiving boundary

Verify installed SSD and health by serial-specific receiving inspection. Cisco Field Notice FN70476 lists ASA5516-FPWR-K8 among affected PIDs. Check serial eligibility, replacement history and long-duration failure exposure before purchase.

Lifecycle status

Cisco records August 31, 2026 as the last support date for ASA 5516-X. The K8 DES edition also requires an explicit non-modern-encryption boundary.

DES and inspection separation

ASA5516-FPWR-K8 is the DES-limited edition. FirePOWER inspection does not convert K8 into a modern encrypted VPN platform, so encrypted dependencies require a different endpoint.

Enumerate DES proposals, peers and protected routes alongside the inspection policies applied to those flows. Migrate encryption and inspection with coordinated tests so tunnel replacement does not silently remove security visibility.

K8 exception burn-down

Assign every DES dependency a business owner, supported target, cutover wave and closure date. For traffic that remains clear text, document the compensating protection and where transport encryption actually terminates. Include FN70476 serial status and a physical failure bypass procedure because the platform has both lifecycle and component-risk constraints. Publish the remaining exception count after each wave; interface capacity or successful boot tests cannot be used to justify extending DES use.
